Middle School

Middle school at St. Catherine of Siena School marks a significant and exciting shift in our students’ educational journey. As they move into sixth through eighth grade, students transition to changing classes and teachers throughout the day, gaining independence and responsibility in managing their schedules and learning. They are entrusted with a wide range of leadership opportunities, both in the classroom and across the school community, serving as role models for our younger students. Academically, they engage in a robust, challenging curriculum designed to spark curiosity, build critical thinking skills, and prepare them for high school and beyond. Through meaningful experiences in faith, service, academics, and leadership, our middle school program empowers students to thrive as confident learners and compassionate leaders.

SIXTH GRADE

Sixth grade is an exciting transitional year! All subjects (Art, ELA, Electives, Math, Music, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, Physical Education, and Religion) are taught by subject area specialists. The students develop higher-level thinking skills as they explore new novels, poems, short stories, and plays; develop writing and research skills; participate in science labs; study ancient civilizations; and encounter new math concepts. In addition to the academic courses, the students also participate in a three-day Outdoor and Environmental Education camp experience!

SEVENTH GRADE

Seventh grade is a year filled with meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for growth. In the fall, seventh graders join the eighth grade class for Camp Orkila, a memorable trip that fosters friendships, strengthens teamwork, and develops leadership skills. In religion class, students participate in the Missionary Discipleship Institute, where they explore leadership and service learning by creating, planning, and carrying out a service project that directly impacts our community. This curriculum incorporates several service opportunities throughout the year, as well as a day spent at St. James Cathedral. Later in the year, the class travels to our state capital in Olympia to deepen their understanding of Washington State history through hands-on exploration and study. During Lent, students prayerfully present the Living Stations of the Cross, offering a powerful reflection for the entire school community.

EIGHTH GRADE

Eighth grade at St. Catherine is a year of exploration, critical thinking, inquiry, and creativity. The year begins with a three-day Leadership and team-building camp setting the stage for becoming the school's role models. Students are engaged in an in-depth analysis of the US Constitution, the Holocaust,  pre-civil war, slavery, and reconstruction. Students work collaboratively on project-based learning activities, feeding their curiosity and developing students' historical perspectives through discussion and questioning. The year of discovery is completed with a culminating self-reflection project shared with family and friends.
