Accelerated Reader is a program for all students who are interested in participating in a motivational reading experience. This program is based on the premise that practice improves reading skills and comprehension. Through a computerized tracking system, students are able to read books at the correct level of difficulty and demonstrate their reading skills on specially designed quizzes which measure how much the child recalls of what is read. The program also includes an assessment component that provides teachers with diagnostic information about students’ reading skills and interests.
Classroom teachers in grades 2-6 have or will be introducing their students to AR in the near future. Teachers in K-1 will use their judgment about student readiness and make individual decisions about when students are ready to participate. Formal assessment of kindergarten students will not take place before spring since they are already involved in the Companion Reading program.
AR is all about increasing the time students read for pleasure. The computerized tracking system is basically an electronic version of a reading log, which students and parents may have used in the past to record the number of pages read in an evening. The advantage to AR is that it also gives a comprehension check and allows students to see how their skills are improving.
