Victoria
Ries -Pastoral Life Director-This is my ninth year at
St. Catherine Parish as the Pastoral Life Director. I am appointed
by the Archbishop to provide pastoral leadership and care for the
parish and its ministries, including the school. I have served in
ministry in the archdioceses for the past 26 years. I began as a
campus and young adult minister working with the two colleges and
the 20 parishes in Pierce County. Since then I served as Pastoral
Associate at St. George Parish for 7 years and as Pastoral Life
Director at St. Patrick for 10 years. I have a PhD in systematic
theology from the University of Chicago Divinity School and am adjunct
faculty at the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. |

| Steve
Mezich - Principal- Steve Mezich has been at St.
Catherine for nine years. He came to us from the Lake Washington
School District, where he served as principal of Redmond Jr.
High, Rose Hill Junior High School and Kamiakan Junior High
School. Under his leadership Redmond Jr. High was nominated
for National Excellence in Education and Kamiakin Jr. High
was awarded Best Junior High in the state by the Blue Ribbon
Commission on excellence in education.

Mr. Mezich lives in Anacortes with his wife,
Jan, and team ropes as a hobby. Steve is also president of the board
of directors of the Sparrow Foundation, a national charitable foundation
that supports youth groups adopting youngsters with critical health
issues. |

Dr.
Nancy Wilson-Assistant Principal- Dr. Nancy Wilson has
been the assistant principal at St. Catherine for eight years. She
was an elementary principal for 16 years, as well as a special education
director, field supervisor for Master in Teaching students, and
graduate level instructor for teachers and principals. She received
her doctorate in educational leadership at Seattle University.
Nancy and her husband Dennis are avid travel buffs and have spent
vacation time in Mexico, Costa Rica, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, France,
and Turkey. Nancy serves on the Board of Directors of the Washington
Research Institute and the Sparrow Foundation. The Wilson's have
lived in the Seattle area since 1978. |
| Chris
Burr - School Secretary- Mrs. Burr has served as the
school secretary for 27 years. Her children are St. Catherine graduates
and she is active in the St. Catherine parish where she supports
numerous parish and school events. Her responsibilities as school
secretary are extensive and she is noted for her humor, enthusiasm,
and care for the many kids and families she has helped educate. She and her husband, Fred, are neighborhood residents
and enjoy their “home away from home” on Lake Cavanaugh. |

| Tammy Matusak
- Preschool and Extended Care - Our early childhood specialist,
Mrs. Tammy Matusak, has been teaching for 21 years at St.
Catherine School. Tammy holds a holds a B.A. in Education. In preschool,
attention is given to developing social skills, large and small
motor skills and pre-reading and writing skills. She uses weekly
theme-based activities such as occupations, healthy food or plants
in developing the preschool curriculum. Her instructional assistant
is Mrs. Lori Knoblich. |

Elizabeth
Mares -Kindergarten- Our kindergarten teacher,
Liz Mares, has taught here for seventeen years. Her energy and enthusiasm
help to create a nurturing and highly interactive learning climate
for our students. Mrs. Mares holds an Associate Degree in Early
Childhood Education and a B.A. in Education. She is the recipient
of a Scholarship Certificate Award for Distinguished Academic Performance.
She is also bilingual in Spanish and English. Mrs. Kathy Moser,
our primary instructional assistant, assists Mrs. Mares. |

| Jennifer
Foisy -Grade 2 - Miss Foisy will be starting her fifth year at St. Catherine School. She comes from St. Mark Parish in
Shoreline. She graduated from Bishop Blanchet High School and received
her teaching certificate from Western Washington University with
an endorsement in Interdisciplinary Child Development. |

Stephanie Schuler - Grade 3
- This is Stephanie Schuler’s
second year at St. Catherine School.
Stephanie began her teaching career almost 30 years ago after
graduating from Seattle University with a degree in Special
Education. In 1988,
Stephanie received a M.Ed. in Computers in Education from St.
Martin’s College. She has taught special education, at the community college
level, religious education and third grade.
Stephanie and her husband
Greg have been married for 31 years.
Since 1992, they have owned a fire equipment company in
Fremont. For the last 11
years, they have lived in Ballard and belong to St. Benedict parish.
Their son, Jacob, is 24 and works with his Dad.
In recent years, their commitment to the homes of Nuestros
Pequeños Hermanos in Central America and their sister parish in
Zambia have taken them many interesting places.
They also enjoy boating, golf, DVD production and precious time
spent with a very large (106 and counting) Schuler family.

Kathleen
Lofstedt - Grade 4 - This is Mrs. Lofstedt's fifth year
at St. Catherine School. In 1981, she started the kindergarten program
at Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Bremerton, where she taught
Kindergarten, then first grade, for 24 years. Mrs. Lofstedt
teaches an after-school French class for our students, writes and
leads prayer services, and is a cantor at
Parish and School Masses. Her goals for her students are to live
their faith, discover their talents, and love learning. |

Deborah
Werner -Grade 5- Deb Werner has been teaching at St.
Catherine School since 1985. She has her teaching degree from the
University of Northern Iowa and has kept her teaching fresh by taking
numerous courses in major curriculum areas including technology
and environmental science.
Some of Ms. Werner’s passions are in the area of environmental
science. She has been the coordinator for rearing salmon in the
classroom for the past 18 years in which students observe and learn
about the life cycle of the salmon and their needs. In addition,
she has taken her 5th grade classes to Olympic Park Institute on
the Olympic Peninsula for a week of learning about the old growth
forest and the organisms that make their homes there.
Deb is a 2001 recipient of the Teacher Leadership Project award
sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through this
grant she has provided many exciting learning opportunities for
her students and colleagues. |

Renee
Acosta -Grade 6-Mrs. Acosta holds a B.A. in English and
Art from Eastern Washington University. This is Mrs. Acosta's
ninth year at St. Catherine. She is a talented writer and has a passion
for literature. She has a son named Conner and they live in
Edmonds. Mrs. Acosta has also supervised speech
club in area competitions. |

| David Buerge
-Grade 8- In conjunction with the University of Washington,
Mr. Buerge, our eighth grade teacher, helped develop an award winning
website at the Library of Congress American Memory Collection.
This work, American
Indians of the Pacific Northwest won an Ameritech award, and was
placed on the Library of Congress site. Mr. Buerge contributed
an essay about Chief Seattle and Chief Joseph. The essay is one
of 15 contributed by local historians and is accompanied by original
documents and numerous photographs. David’s teaching focus is on the use of primary sources with the middle
school students.
Mr. Buerge is a noted historian and author and is in great demand
as a speaker.

| Judy
Sheridan - Study Skills - Judy received her BA from
Holy Names College in Spokane, Washington. She began her teaching
career in the sixties at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Everett,
where she taught sixth grade for two years. From there she went
to St. Luke’s and taught fifth grade for a year. She then
taught sixth grade at Lake Forest Park in Shoreline for three years.
She got married and had six children, and stayed home to raise them.
She then returned to teaching in 1980 here at St. Catherine. She
taught kindergarten for one year and then fourth grade for twenty-one
years. Judy began semi-retirement in 2002 and now assists middle
school students with study skills. |
| Stacey Sunde
-Music- Stacey received her training in K-12 music education
from Pacific Lutheran University. She teaches
at St. Catherine’s School, and also conducts the
St. Catherine Parish Youth Choir (many voices strong!). Ms. Sunde
is also a cantor at St. James Cathedral, where she directs the Youth
Music Program. |

| Nile Clarke
-Physical Education- Nile Clarke attended Western Washington
University where he received his BA in History Education. He earned
a Masters degree from the University of Washington in Social Studies
Curriculum. His teaching experience includes 10 years at North Mercer
Junior High and 21 years at Mercer Island High School. His coaching
experience includes Basketball, Soccer, Track and Cross Country.
Mr. Clarke received the distinguished graduate award from Mercer
Island High School for his work in setting up a District Wide Service
Learning Program. Mr. Clarke is married and the proud grandfather
of two sets of identical twins. |

| Margaret Hartley
-Visual Arts, Library, 7th & 8th Grade Language Arts - Margaret holds a BA in Art History
from Auckland University in New Zealand and a Masters of Education
in Reading Instruction. She is endorsed to teach English, Science
and Art. Margaret is a member of the Northwest Collage Society and
exhibits her work locally. This is Margaret’s 7th year at St. Catherine
School. |
