Welcome to Second Grade!
Religion |
The
curriculum we will use this year is titled We Believe. In second
grade we focus on the Mass and the sacraments. Every day the students
have opportunities to pray, whether during our religion time or at the
beginning and ending of the day, and learn about their Catholic faith.
They will be learning specific vocabulary words, bible stories, and
prayers throughout the year. |
 Reading |
There
is a combination of curriculum used in second grade. We use the Silver
Burdett Ginn curriculum and some other supplemental books, as well as,
the Slingerland curriculum that is used in kindergarten and first grade.
There are also a variety of components in the program, including,
reading, phonics, writing, comprehension, and grammar. |
Writing |
Writing
will be taught using the Step Up to Writing curriculum. Sentence
structure, word choice, and paragraph writing will be a focus this year.
The students will use the writing process of pre-writing, drafting,
revising, editing, and publishing a variety of writing pieces. |
Math |
We
are using the Math Trailblazers curriculum, which provides opportunities
to use manipulatives and hands on materials.
This year’s focus is continuing addition and subtraction of
larger numbers and problem solving strategies.
Computation, number sense, measurement, estimation, time, money,
geometry, data, and graphing are all part of the curriculum as well. I
supplement the math curriculum with one-minute math drills, to offer the
students addition practice in memorizing their math facts. |
 Social
Studies |
The
program that we are using for social studies is Harcourt Horizons.
This program teaches thematic units about community, government,
looking at the earth, and learning about people. |
 Science |
There are several themes that we will be learning about in science as well. One theme will be a focus for each trimester. The first trimester we will be studying pebbles, sand and silt.
